When I interviewed Will Saul for Jæger last month, the British producer and label boss, mentioned that Sei A‘s next album for AUS, Space in your Mind will “pleasantly surprise” those familiar with the artist “because it will show another more interesting, more melodic dimension to what he does.” Last night the first cut from that forthcoming album surfaced through the label’s Soundcloud page and immediately it seemed to bring Saul’s words to life . Sei A’s Ancestors is heavily orchestrated with woollen pads, a rubbery juno bass-line, and various sequenced synths and fx that continually modulate along the harmonic- and melodic movement. It’s progressive dance music in every sense of the word, from that unique grumbling sub-lower end to the crunching noises that mark the next phrase of the track and a change in key. At times Ancestors is reminiscent of Factory Floor, while at others it carries with it that UK deep house sound made popular by the likes of Julio Bashmore. Ancestors is indeed a pleasant surprise, and I look forward to hearing it in the context of the rest of Space in your Mind.
